READER'S FEEDBACK
The Real Dirt can be experienced as a metaphor for the ground that sustains the germination and growth of the life of the author.
The author invites us to accompany him on his journey from young boyhood to maturity and self realization as he navigates the triumphs and tragedies that mark his progress. The life lessons he describes on the way to becoming a successful organic farmer and merchant are punctuated with relevant quotations from the great thinkers of history. Ghandi, Thoreau, Wendell Berry, Einstein and Bob Dylan are quite at home among the pages of this fascinating journal. Besides the intellectual stimulation that the reading provides, clear directions on certain growing methods in various circumstances are provided along the way. The Real Dirt is an inspiring book about living, learning, and doing the right thing. I believe it will take it's place among the classics of the genre. Practical wisdom, philosophy, self discovery and growth are the gift of this reading experience. I consider it a work of high quality and hope that Peter Burkard will write more in years to come.

I picked up Peters book at just the right time in my life, when questioning whether being a city-farmer was a rational decision. I knew in my heart it was what I was born to do, but only another nature-freak can explain the love and passion for growing edibles and sharing natures bounty. I am re-inspired to reach out to the community and be thankful for my skills. Thanks for a beautiful book, Peter!

"Peter Burkard's memoir informs and inspires as Burkard recounts his determination to stay true to his values and make a living by growing and selling organic produce in Florida. He credits his childhood freedom to explore the natural environment and the radical movements of the 60's and 70's with his decision to live in harmony with nature.
"His liberal use of relevant statistics, helpful tips for living simply, and pertinent quotes increase the reader's interest and enjoyment. The quotes, both pithy and poignant, represent such diverse voices as Mark Twain, John Lennon, Howard Zinn, Scott Nearing and others.
"Readers will believe Burkard's commitment to honesty and morality because his compassion and goodness shine clearly throughout the text. His generosity and humility are evidenced by his praise of others who led the way, and by his refusal to condemn those who have yet to embrace his lifestyle. Although he stresses the importance of changing our behavior to save the planet, his tone is gently persuasive, never strident.
"The Real Dirt offers more than the story of one man's life and many suggestions for living in harmony with nature. It allows younger generations a glimpse of what the turbulent decades of the 60's and 70's were like and how the music and political activism of that era changed lives. This engaging read belongs in public, high school, and college libraries."
